Community leader murdered in Mapiripán, Meta

On 2 December, community leader Carlos Arturo Mena Rentería was murdered in Mapiripán, department of Meta.

According to Moises Ortiz, another local community leader, 'people are very worried because they'd known Carlos for many years and he was a very well-known leader'.

Mapiripán is the location of one of the most paramilitary atrocities in Colombian history. Over five days in July 1997, paramilitaries abducted, tortured and murdered around 30 civilians in the town. This was done with the military's knowledge, as soldiers stationed nearby faild to act against the paramilitaries and allowed them to pass through cjeckpoints on their way to the town.
