UN Refugee Agency condemns violence against political activists in Colombia

The United Nations Refugee Agency has condemned ongoing violence against social leaders and political activists in Colombia. So far in 2017, at least 100 people have been murdered for engaging in political forms of collective organisation or activism.

'We saw there was a recurrent problem, we investigated and we confirmed that, yes, there is a pattern', said agency spokesperson William Spindler. He also said that cases of forced displacement and forced confinement were impacting communities on Colombia's Pacific coast. A proliferation of armed groups in the region meant it was hard to identify those responsible for killing social leaders, he added.
