UNESCO's director general Irina Bokova has condemned the killing by Colombian riot police of indigenous journalist Efigenia Vásquez, which occurred in Cauca on 8 October, and encouraged the Colombian government to conduct a full investigation.

Bokova said: 'I condemn the killing of Efigenia Vásquez Astudillo. I call on the authorities to investigate this crime, which undermines both freedom of expression and freedom of information, rights that are crucial to any democracy'.

Vásquez was killed while covering protests by local communities at the Puracé national park, where, according to regional organisations, private ownership infringes on indigenous land claims.
