Armed ESMAD riot police have attacked Colombian demonstrators in areas affected by a nationwide strike that began on Monday 23 October. Clashes have been particularly strong in the departments of Catatumbo, Cauca and Nariño.

Strike organisers are demanding that the government fulfil obligations agreed under the terms of the 2016 peace agreement, such as rural development, land reform and implementation of crop substitution programmes. They are also demanding higher security for political activists following the murder of more than 100 people so far in 2017.

The indefinite strike involves political and social organisations from across Colombia including National Coordinator of Coca, Poppy and Marijuana Growers, Patriotic March, the National Coordination of Communities and Afro-Descendant Organizations and the National Coordination of Indigenous Peoples, among others.
