Intruders raid offices of independent news outlet Prensa Rural

In the early hours of Wednesday 25 October, unidentified assailants broke into the offices of Colombian independent news outlet Prensa Rural (Rural Press), located in the Teusaquillo neighbourhood of Bogota.

Although other organisations are based in the same building, the intruders only entered the Prensa Rural office. Once inside, they ransacked materials and stole media equipment. This suggests the break-in was directed at the media outlet, which focuses on issues of peace, human rights and social organisation. In this way, it presents a thorn in the side to dominant interests in Colombia, particularly relating to big business, the state and right-wing sectors.

The intrusion raises concerns over deliberate targeting of independent journalism. Police have opened an investigation.
