Indigenous governor murdered in Chocó

Justice For Colombia News | on: Thursday, 26 October 2017

An indigenous community leader is the latest political activist murdered in Colombia, continuing a recent wave of violence targeting those engaged in political or social organising. Aulio Isarama Forastero was governor of the Catru, Dubaza, Ancoso indigenous community in Alto Baudó, department of Chocó. On Tuesday 24 October, unknown men entered the zone and accosted Aulio, saying they wanted to speak to him, before shooting him two hours later.

Local residents have cited as responsible the same men who kidnapped teacher Jhon Eriberto Isarama Forastero on 7 October.

Chocó has been strongly affected by the presence of armed groups looking to establish territorial control. So far in 2017, over 100 social and political activists have been murdered in Colombia.
