Two social leaders tortured by paramilitaries in Antioquia.

On 1 October 2017, paramilitaries belonging to the Gaitanist Self-Defence Forces (Autodefensas Gaitanistas, AGC) entered the community of Blanquicet in Turbo, department of Antioquia, and subjected two residents to torture.

The assault followed a community leader's warning on 28 September that paramilitaries were increasingly active in the zone, primarily in the intimidation of local activists. A few days later, Juan Viloria and Fidencio Calle were attacked after they returned to their homes following a community meeting of social leaders and organisations. Both were severely beaten.

The incident is the latest in a string of aggressions which have caused local leaders to appeal for higher security presence in the zone. They say that several small landholders and small business owners have been forced to abandon their property due to intimidation by paramilitaries.

Paramilitary groups continue to operate and have increased presence in areas previously controlled by the FARC. This is one of the main challenges facing the implementation peace deal.
