Niece of victims rights activist murdered in southwest Colombia

News from Colombia | on: Wednesday, 20 September 2017

A young member of the Patriotic March social movement who was also niece of a recognised defender of victims’ rights was found murdered on 4 September 2017.

The previous day Karolayn Parra went to the cinema together with her cousin but that was the last anyone knew of her. She was later identified by her parents after her body was found. Karolyan’s aunt had worked for several years to uncover murders that had taken place in the local area against members of the Patriotic Union - a left-wing political party that was wiped out in the 1980s and 1990s by a state backed campaign of terror. As a result of her research she had suffered a series of death threats via email and telephone but she continued with her work.

The murder of Karolyan was reported to the authroites but the family had one week later received no news.
