Final arms of the FARC removed from transitory zones

News from Colombia | on: Wednesday, 16 August 2017

In another historic day for Colombia and the peace process between the Colombian government and the FARC, in a UN operation the more than 8,000 guns handed over by demobilising FARC troops were removed from the 26 zones were the FARC troops are currently located.

This was another important step on the road to the FARC becoming a political organisation. The arms will be melted down and made into three statues to be located in Colombia, Cuba (where the talks took place), and outside the headquarters of the UN in New York.

Arms have also been removed from over 500 of the documented 873 storage points where the FARC stored heavier arms and other materials.

This brings an end to the laying down of arms process and allows for complete focus on the reincorporation of the more than 10,000 registered FARC members. Already however this process is far behind schedule with minimal education or production progrmas having begun.
