News from Colombia | on: Thursday, 3 August 2017

On the 31 July 2017 Huber Ballesteros received another death threat from the paramilitary group Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC). This is the tenth threat sent to Huber Ballesteros, who sits on the executive of the Patriotic March as well as the trade union FENSUAGRO and CUT, and who has only recently been released from prison where he was held for 40 months on trumped-up charges.

Just the day before, 30 July, the Colombian paramilitary group Autodefensas Gaitanistas distributed leaflets making threats against the leaders of social organisations in the streets of the city of Barrancabermeja. Such incidents are designed to intimidate social activists and deter young people in Colombia from belonging to social movements and working to defend the human rights of activists against the attacks and persecution of paramilitary groups.

The Patriotic March has expressed urgency that high profile activists such as Huber Ballesteros receive adequate protection measures and that full investigations must be carried out into the threats and intimidation.
