On 16 July Ezequiel Rangel, a local leader from the peasant farmer organisation, ASCAMCAT – an affiliate of the Patriotic March - was assassinated in the department of Norte de Santander.

At 5 am on the morning of 17 July, Ezequiel's family received a phone call informing them that his body had been found with multiple bullet wounds. He had left his home the day before around 5.30 pm and the last known news of him was reported at about 10 pm, when he was travelling in the area by motorbike.
