FARC complete laying down of arms process

News from Colombia | on: Tuesday, 27 June 2017

On Monday 26 June the United Nations announced that they have received all individual arms from FARC combatants. They have registered 7132 weapons from approximately 7,000 FARC members, which are now stored in containers in 26 transition zones. These will be removed by 1 August when the zones will transform into Regional Spaces for Training and Reincorporation. Alongside the individual weapons the UN have also verified 77 arms caches.

The completion of this momentous task means that after 53 years after taking up arms, the FARC will now become a non-armed political organisation. On Tuesday a ceremony will take place attended by President Santos and FARC leader Rodrigo Londoño.
