Families continue to be displaced in Colombia

News from Colombia | on: Tuesday, 20 June 2017

Colombia is famous for its alarming number of displaced people. Apart from Syria it has the highest figure of displaced people anywhere in the world with more than 7 million people having been forced to abandon their homes.

This figure continued to grow this year as another 7,000 people were forced to abandon their homes. The UN recorded 42 mass displacements over the first six months of the year which indicates that the figure for 2017 may be higher than 2016.

The displacement has been particularly focused in the Afrocolombian communities with over half of the incidents taking place in regions with a high proportion Afrocolombian population. Indigenous and peasant communities were also affected.
