News from Colombia | on: Friday, 9 June 2017

Bernardo Cuero, an Afro-Colombian human rights defender and chairperson of the victims' organisation in the Department of Atlántico, was assassinated on the evening of Wednesday 7 June. He was watching television at home when two men arrived on a motorcycle and shot him dead.

Bernardo was the national lawyer for the National Association for Internally Displaced Afro-Colombians (AFRODES) and had received a series of death threats for his activism. For the last two years he had been seeking security guarantees from the National Protection Unit (UNP) with no response.

In 2000 Bernardo was displaced from Tumaco by paramilitaries after the assassination of another colleague and activist.
