Explosive device set-off outside headquarters of teacher union

An explosion hit the front of the headquarters of the teachers union FECODE last week in the midst of ongoing strike action.

The President of the union linked the explosion to paramilitary groups who have sent death threats to union leaders and social activists. Local authorities meanwhile have refused to recognise that the explosion was aimed at FECODE even though it was set off outside the front of their offices.

FECODE members have been on strike since last week to demand greater investment in the education system. A further demand is that the government takes steps to ensure that public education is accessible in at least 80% of the country, currently only 58% of the country is covered.
