Paramilitaries open fire near transitional zone

News from Colombia | on: Thursday, 4 May 2017

An armed group have been reported repeatedly firing rifles near a transitional zone in Nariño department, where FARC members are currently located. Identifying themselves with the acronym RAUC, they have threatened to assassinate all FARC collaborators and carry out a "social cleansing" operation. They are dressed in uniforms used exclusively by Colombian military forces and they also carry new rifles.

On 17th April, the Inter-Church Justice and Peace Commission denounced that paramilitary group, called the Gaitanista Self-Defence Forces of Colombia (AGC), arrived in the territory of Jiguamiandó, Chocó. They were armed, dressed in camouflage gear, with armbands with AGC acronym. They were offering 800,000 Colombian pesos (about £200) for people to work with them.

These reports confirm that areas of the country vacated by the FARC are being occupied by armed groups, despite the Colombian government's denial of any systematic link between paramilitary groups and the ongoing assassinations of social leaders.
