José Antonio Anzola Tejedor and Luz Ángela Anzola were killed within two hours of each other in the Department of Meta on Sunday 5th March. Both were members of the Colombian Communist Party and a local peasant farmer union SINTRAGRIM, which forms part of the larger FENSUAGRO.
Armed men with covered faces arrived at their house in the night and in the morning they were killed.
The union denounced that in the aftermath of the killing the local police unit released a statement claiming they had been killed in response to thefts they had carried out.
22 community leaders and political activists have been killed so far in 2017 as reports of paramilitary presence grow at an alarming rate.
Government officials continue to play down the systematic nature of the attacks and the reports of strengthening paramilitaries.
