A Colombian organisation for urban and rural development, ORDEUCA, has reported the assassination of one of its leaders on the 16 October in the Cauca region. Yimer Chavez Rivera was with his wife when he was stopped on this motorbike by two hooded men, and shot. His wife was also injured but she survived the attack.
Yimer Chavez Rivera , 31, was a father and untiring defender of human rights and advocate for peace.
In spite of the signature of the peace agreement between the FARC-EP and the Colombian government, and the progress being made in peace talks with the ELN, there has been an increase in the number of threats and attacks against men and women in the Cauca region. Yimer’s assassination was not the first attack on a member of ORDEURCA, which has set up a scheme across several municipalities, for civilian guards to act as role models in protecting and rebuilding trust within communities and re-appropriating the region. The assassination of Yimer Chaves Rivera is considered a direct attack on their mission to build peace in the Cauca region.
