Pregnant teenager killed by army

News from Colombia | on: Wednesday, 20 January 2016

A 14 year old pregnant teenager was killed by the Colombian army in a military operation in Antioquia on 17 January. Melisa Espitia Mazo was at a family party in Piamonte Cáceres when she was shot dead in the early hours of the morning. An adult, José Antonio Fabra, was also wounded at the scene.

The killing has caused uproar in Colombia. Whilst the army have stated that the death was a "military error" - a soldier acting in legitimate defence during the search for a local paramilitary leader - the teenager's family and local community have disputed this version of events, saying the teenager was murdered by the army.
