News from Colombia | on: Thursday, 14 January 2016

A regional office of the Colombian TUC (CUT) has denounced the murder of Robert Venecia Vega on 15th December 2015. He was shot dead in an armed robbery outside a shopping centre in Cartagena. He was the twenty-fourth trade unionist killed in 2015.

Robert worked for the cement company Argos and was the treasurer of the regional office of SUTIMAC, a union which represents workers in the ceramic and cement industry, in the department of Bolivar.

Union leaders have called attention to the current wave of violent crime in Cartagena and the government's failure to deal with the large presence of armed gangs in the city, which daily rob and threaten the lives of residents and social activists.
