Paramilitaries Kill Peasant Farmer in Army Zone

Human rights organisations in Caloto, Cauca department have reported the shooting of Aldemar Pinto Barrios, a peasant trade unionist and member of the Patriotic March on Sunday 5th August.

Mr Pinto was with two friends in the market square of the town of El Palo when 2 men arrived riding a motorbike. The man on the back opened fire hitting Mr Pinto in the head, neck and chest, killing him instantly. The two other men injured were also trade unionists of the Association of Peasant Workers of Caloto, an affiliate of the FENSUAGRO agricultural workers’ union. Yidver Eduardo Villa Villada and Jhon Harvy Bedoya are recovering in hospital.

The region is under the control of the army’s 14th Mobile Brigade, and has been subjected to an armed transport blockade by members of the Black Eagles paramilitary group.
