The Awa people of Ricaurte have reported the assassination on 21st July of Mr Libio Guanga, a community worker, local organiser and the Governor of the Alto Cartagena reserve.
Mr Guanga was on his way home from a meeting with local authorities when he was stopped by an unidentified man who proceeded to stab him to death.
In 2007 and 2010 the Awa were victims of massacres, and some leaders were killed by selective assassination. This led to the Constitutional Court bestowing protective measures on them.
The latest killing has provoked concerns that the Awa will be subjected to renewed victimisation, and the Camawari organisation is demanding that the assassination be properly investigated by the authorities.
